Triglav National Park is home to more than 7,000 animal species, from the tiniest inhabitants to large carnivores. One of the most fascinating birds is the white-throated dipper, the only songbird that can swim and dive. Chamois roam the steep rocks around Bohinj and the vast forests are home to brown bears and lynx, among others.
Bohinj is in bloom throughout the year and everywhere. It is home to more than 1,600 plant species, and even boasts 43 species of orchids. Pristine wild flower meadows, pastures and mountain pastures are home to rare and protected plants, such as the queen of the Alps (Eryngium alpinum) and the endemic Bohinj perennial iris (Iris cengialti vochinensis). Four flowers are named after Slovenia’s highest mountain – Mt. Triglav: Triglav hawksbeard (Crepis terglouensis), Alpine forget-me-not (Eritrichium nanum), Triglav rose (Pink cinquefoil/Potentilla nitida) and Triglav gentian (Gentiana terglouensis).
The rich deposits of iron ore in the mountains played an important role in the settlement of Bohinj. The oldest archaeological finds date back to the Bronze Age. The development of Bohinj has been closely linked to the iron industry throughout the centuries. The name of the village Stara Fužina is a reminder of the iron industry, because the Slovenian word fužina means iron furnace. In 1891, the ironworks in Bohinjska Bistrica was destroyed by fire. This event marked the beginning of the decline of the iron industry in Bohinj, as iron production was moved to Jesenice after the fire.
The Gorjuše Pipe Room was inspired by one of the oldest local crafts in Bohinj – pipe making. The tradition dates back to the 18th century, when people from Gorjuše and Koprivnik used to make artistically carved pipes in late autumn and winter. Sold both in Slovenia and abroad, the pipes were a symbol of honour and a status symbol.
One of Bohinj’s greatest assets is undoubtedly its wealth of clean water resources. Lake Bohinj is the largest permanent lake in Slovenia. Its main tributary is the Savica River, which begins its journey as the mighty double Savica waterfall in the steep cliffs of Komarča. The Mostnica River, which springs in the Voje Valley, forms a picturesque gorge on its way to Ribčev Laz, where it flows into the Sava Bohinjka.
